What Does Red Light Therapy Do?

You may have heard about red light therapy and the numerous health benefits it promotes. But what does red light therapy do? Does it actually work as advertised?

In today’s post, we take a look at what red light therapy actually does to improve your health and the benefits that come with it. Grab a cup of your favorite beverage, take a seat, and let’s get into it!

What Does Red Light Therapy Do?

To put it simply, red light therapy delivers concentrated waves of red and near-infrared light into the skin and body, stimulating our mitochondria. This process helps produce Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP), which is the powerhouse inside our body that creates the energy we use for cell regeneration and as fuel throughout the day.

How Do You Use Red Light Therapy?

To achieve the benefits of the therapy, you only need to sit in front of a high-quality RLT device for 10-15 minutes each day! It’s very simple! Here’s how it works:

  1. Remove your clothes to expose your skin for the best results.
  2. Position yourself approximately 15 centimeters from the device. If you’re using a smaller device for targeted treatment, make sure it directly faces the target area.
  3. Turn on red light and near-infrared light on your device (we recommend using both for more effective treatments) and set the countdown timer to 10 minutes.
  4. Relax and enjoy your treatment for the next 10 minutes.

Repeat this four-step process every day for the best results. Remember, consistency is key!

Can I Have Longer Therapy Sessions for Even More Benefits?

You might be asking, can I use it for a longer time each day to receive extra benefits? Yes and no. Let me explain…

Clinical studies have shown that there is only so much energy we can absorb from a therapy session before our cells are fully charged. Like a battery, there is only a certain capacity available before they're full. So, any session over 15 minutes is usually ineffective, but definitely NOT detrimental to your health.

If you have a specific problem area or symptom you’d like to treat as fast as possible, we recommend two sessions per day, with at least 12 hours between sessions. This gives your cells enough time to use the energy from your previous session, and they’ll be ready for another charge.

Health Benefits of Red and Near Infrared Light Therapy

Now that you know what red light therapy does and how to use a device for daily sessions, let’s look at the specific health benefits of the therapy so you can start using it to upgrade your health!

Melatonin and Sleep

Being exposed to artificial light from technology can disrupt your circadian rhythm, affecting your sleep quality. However, red light therapy does the opposite, helping to protect your circadian rhythm and your body's “internal clock.” It can also increase the natural production of melatonin, which helps prepare your body for a good night's sleep. We recommend using your device 30 minutes before bed to trigger your circadian rhythm and start the natural release of melatonin.

Skin, Collagen, and Anti-Aging

Red light therapy helps improve skin complexion, decrease inflammation and pain, fade stretch marks and scars, repair sun damage, reduce wrinkles, and quicken the skin’s healing process. It stimulates collagen production, which gives your skin better elasticity and holds connective tissue together, tightening the skin and providing anti-aging effects.

Training and Muscle Recovery

Red light therapy also helps with muscle growth and recovery. It works by helping the body produce more cellular energy and reducing oxidative stress, which helps repair and recover tired and damaged muscle tissues.

Inflammation and Joint Pain

Red light therapy helps reduce inflammation and joint pain by reducing oxidative stress and stimulating cellular energy production (adenosine triphosphate or ATP). There have been hundreds of well-documented studies showing the positive results of red light therapy for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other types of inflammation and joint pain.
